What makes it an experienced project
Three things combine, and each would be manageable alone.
Sock weight yarn on a small hook, across a full garment. That is a very large number of stitches, and progress is slow. This is a project measured in months.
A fitted garment, so gauge genuinely matters. An error compounds across the width, and a mesh fabric offers no forgiveness.
Freeform sections, which by definition are not written out stitch by stitch. You are asked to improvise within a shape, which requires enough experience to know what will work.
About the freeform elements
Freeform crochet builds organically – shapes worked in different stitches and joined as you go, rather than following a fixed row-by-row pattern.
Used at the neckline and shoulders, it draws the eye upward to the face, which is exactly where you want attention on a garment. The rest of the jacket stays quiet mesh so the detail reads clearly.
If freeform is new to you, work several sample pieces before committing them to the garment. They can be made in advance, laid out, rearranged and stitched down once you are happy – which is a considerable advantage over having to improvise in place.
Gauge and fit
Swatch in the mesh pattern, not in plain double crochet, and block the swatch before measuring. Open fabrics change size significantly when blocked.
Compare the pattern’s finished measurements against a jacket you already own and like, rather than against your body measurements. That accounts for the ease the designer intended.
Yarn
Sock weight covers a range, so check gauge carefully. A yarn with some drape will hang better than a firmly spun one – this is a garment meant to move.
Buy all of it at once in matching dye lots. A colour shift across a mesh panel is very visible.
Blocking
Essential. Mesh comes off the hook looking irregular and only becomes even and geometric once wetted and pinned.
Block the pieces before assembly and the finished jacket again afterward.
