Small knitted booties in newborn size, worked in fingering weight yarn on 2.5 to 3 mm needles. The pattern is a translation from German and is available as a free download, with a link to the German original.
Fingering weight and small needles
The fine yarn and small needles are correct for newborn booties, even though they make the work slower. At this size a heavier yarn produces a bootie that is stiff and bulky on a very small foot, and the proportions look wrong.
The pieces are tiny, so despite the fine gauge a pair is still an evening’s work rather than a project.
Working from a translated pattern
Translated patterns occasionally use terms that do not map cleanly. If an instruction does not make sense, look at the original alongside it – knitting abbreviations are fairly international and the German original will often clarify what the translation garbled.
If there are charts, trust the chart over the text. Charts survive translation intact.
Newborn sizing
Newborn is a short-lived size. If these are a gift and the baby has not arrived, consider making a slightly larger pair as well – newborn booties are frequently outgrown before they are worn at all.
Measure against a foot length of roughly 3 to 3.5 inches for a newborn.
Yarn
Soft and machine washable. Baby items are washed constantly, and a hand-wash-only bootie will be worn once.
Superwash merino sock yarn is ideal here – it is fingering weight, it is soft, and it is already machine washable. Much of it also comes in the small quantities this project needs.
Check softness against your wrist rather than your fingers.
Keeping them on
Booties fall off. If the pattern has a tie or a strap, use it. If not, a short length of narrow elastic threaded through the ankle round will hold them without being tight.
Skip long ribbon ties on newborn items.
