With the right techniques and easy patterns, making your own Christmas gifts need not be intimidating. Even a beginner can make things people are genuinely pleased to receive.
The trick is choosing the right projects.
What makes a project achievable
One skein. Anything needing multiple balls is not a quick project, and it removes the risk of running out.
No fit to get wrong. Nobody’s measurements needed.
Finished when the knitting stops. Projects requiring seaming, lining or assembly take roughly twice as long as the knitting suggests.
Chunky yarn. The fastest single decision available. Bulky yarn on large needles produces a finished object in a fraction of the time.
Projects that meet all four
A cowl. Cast on, work in the round until long enough, cast off. No shaping, no seaming, no sizing. An evening in chunky yarn.
A garter stitch scarf. Every row knitted. Always fits, always welcome, and it shows off a nice yarn.
Fingerless mitts. A tube with a gap for the thumb. Quick, useful, fits almost anyone.
A hat. Slightly more involved because of the crown decreases, but still an evening in bulky yarn.
Dishcloths in cotton. A set of three with a bar of good soap is a genuinely nice gift.
Coasters or a mug cosy, from oddments.
What not to attempt
A sweater. It is a months-long project even for an experienced knitter, and starting one in November is how Christmas becomes stressful.
Socks, unless you already knit them. The second sock is where good intentions go.
Anything requiring a size you have to guess.
Choosing yarn
Softer than you think you need, especially for anything worn at the neck. Test it against your neck rather than your hands.
Machine washable, unless you know the recipient will hand wash. A beautiful gift that cannot go in the machine often quietly stops being worn.
Finishing properly
This takes ten minutes and it is where a handmade gift is won or lost.
Block it – even a cowl looks noticeably better wetted and dried flat. Weave every end in and trim close. Wrap it well, with a tag saying what it is made of and how to wash it.
