Quick Warm Mittens (Crochet)

Made with 2 strands of yarn for double thickness and they work up fast. Uses the moss stitch.
MATERIALS Yarn: 4 ply worsted weight. I used Mary Maxim Starlette Worsted Weight yarn. This pattern is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together. Hook: 7.00 mm
Gauge: 3 sc = 1 inch, 2 rows of sc = 1 inch
Size: Women's adult. My hands are small so for larger mittens, add more rows on the cuff (ending with an even number of rows), and more rounds on the mitten . I added instructions on where to add or subtract rounds for larger or smaller mittens.
Mitten measures about 4 inches across the back of hand. Mitten is 10 inches long, including the cuff, 7 inches excluding the cuff.
Abbreviations used:
ch - chain st - stitch ss - slip stitch sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet tbl - through back loops ss2tog - slip stitch 2 together hdc2tog - half double crochet 2 together.
How to do the Moss Stitch: The moss stitch is really simple, it's a combination of slip stitches and hdcs. You make 1 slip stitch in a st of the previous Row, then 1 hdc in the next st. When you are going back across on the next Row, you make your ss in the hdc of previous Rnd and your hdc in the ss of the previous Rnd. How to ss2tog: insert hook into st, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into next st, yarn over and pull up a loop and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.
How to hdc2tog: yarn over hook and insert into st, pull up a loop, yarn over hook and insert into next st, pull up a loop, yarn over hook and pull through all 5 loops on hook.
Cuff
Worked back and forth in rows. All stitches on the cuff are through the back loop of stitch only.
Ch 8
Row 1 - Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 6 chs, ch 1, turn. (7sc)
Rows 2-15: Tbl 1 sc in each st, ch 1, turn. (7sc)
(For larger mittens, add more Rows in muliples of 2's. For every 2 rows you add, your mitten cuff is increased by 1 inch in circumference. Omitting 2 rows will decrease your mitten cuff by 1 inch.)
Row 16 - Joining row, ss to corresponding chs in Row 1, (or you could just sew it together).
CONTINUE AS FOLLOWS FOR THE REST OF THE MITTEN (all sts through both loops) Remember to begin in each row in the 1st stitch, not in the slip stitch where you joined:
Rnd 1 - With right side of work towards you, ch 1, 1 sc in the end of each row of ribbing, ss to join, ch 1 loosely, turn. (16 sc)
(If you increased or decreased the rows on your cuff, your stitch count will be more or less by the amount of rows you added or omitted.)
Rnd 2 - Over the next 7 sts, work 1 hdc, 1 ss alternately. In next st increase by making 1 ss and 1 hdc (note: these are made in the same st), do the same in the next st. 1 ss in next st. 1 hdc, 1 ss alternately in next 6 sts, ss to join, ch 1 loosely, turn. (18 sts)
(For larger or smaller mittens, divide your stitch count by 2, then subtract 1 and that is where you do your increases for Rnds 2, 3 and 4)

Rnd 1 - Join yarn, ch 1 and 1 ss in the first st of thumb opening. Over next 3 sts, do the moss stitch of 1 hdc, 1 ss. Pick up 4 sts around the remaining thumb opening by working moss stitch of 1 ss, 1 hdc. Slip stitch to join, ch 1, turn. (8 sts)
Rnd 2 - Work in pattern (1 ss, 1 hdc) to end of row, ss to join, ch 1, turn.

(For larger or smaller mittens, you will probably have to add or omit Rnds here)
Rnd 6 - (ss2tog, hdc2tog), twice. (4 sts) Fasten off leaving a tail of yarn to sew up the opening.
Using a darning needle, weave yarn through the sts of the last Row, pull tight to close up the end of the thumb, weave in yarn to secure closing.
