In this article you will learn about the extended single crochet, and how to use it to whip up a nice crochet dishcloth for yourself or your family and friends. The dishcloth pattern is given in one size, but you can increase or decrease that to any size you want in a simple multiple of two.

The extended single crochet is commonly abbreviated as ESC. The crochet stitch is basically an extension of the single crochet, and results in a lovely fabric. I find that it's a bit softer than a regular single crochet, making it great for when you want something with drape and elegance.

To make the extended single crochet (esc): Insert hook in stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through one loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

To make this crochet dishcloth, you will need a worsted weight cotton yarn and an H/8-5.00mm crochet hook.

The finished size of this dishcloth measures 7 by 7.25 inches.

To begin, chain 22,

Row 1: (Esc, chain 1) in 2nd chain from hook, *skip next chain, (esc, chain 1) in next chain; repeat from * across. (11 esc) Turn.

Row 2: (Esc, ch 1) in first esc and into each esc across. (11 esc). Turn.

Rows 3-16: Same as row 2. Do not fasten off yet, but continue with the edging below.

For the Edging you will now begin working in a round, going all around the dishcloth.

Round 1: Chain 1 and single crochet around working 19 stitches evenly along each side and 3 stitches into each corner. (88 stitches)

Round 2: Chain 1, (esc, chain 1) in same stitch as join, slip stitch in next stitch, *(esc, chain 1) in next stitch, slip stitch in next stitch; repeat from * around; join with a slip stitch in first esc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

You can increase this dishcloth size by increasing your starting chains in any multiple of two. And that means you could easily crochet a baby blanket or a full-sized blanket for the bed or the living room sofa. If making blankets you might also want to switch to an acrylic yarn as it's less expensive.

You could also start with fewer chains and make an elegant scarf. This pattern is also easy to crochet in the round, thus making it great for bags, hats, cowls, legwarmers or anything along those lines.

This pattern would also look great in stripes if you switched up the colors in each row or round. You are the artist, and the possibilities are endless.

So I hope that you enjoyed this free crochet pattern.
