MATERIALS Yarn: 4 ply worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Grape Fizz. a 141 g skein, and I had lots left over. Hook: 4.50 mm. These fit me and my hands are quite small so if your hands are an average size you might want to use a 5.00 mm hook. However, the mittens are stretchy.
See Charts for hook size conversions.

Size: Adult

Gauge: 4 sc = 1 inch 4 rows of sc ribbing = 1 inch

Abbreviations used:

ch - chain st - stitch ss - slip stitch sc - single crochet

hdc - half double crochet tog - together dec - decrease

How to do the Moss Stitch: The moss stitch is really simple, it's a combination of slip stitches and hdcs. You make 1 slip stitch in a st of the previous Row, then 1 hdc in the next st. When you are going back across on the next Row, you make your ss in the hdc of previous Rnd and your hdc in the ss of the previous Rnd. Here is a video showing the moss stitch being worked and you get can a better view of how it looks. http://youtu.be/tR2GfDB80tE

How to make 2 hdc tog - yarn over hook, insert in st, yarn over hook and pull up a loop, yarn over hook and insert in next st, yarn over hook and pull up a loop, yarn over hook and pull through all 5 loops on hook.

How to make 2 ss tog - insert hook in st, yarn over hook and pull up a loop, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop and pull through the 2 loops on hook.

NOTE: This pattern is designed so the mitten will fit both left and right hands.

CUFF - All stitches on the cuff are through the back loop of stitch only.

Ch. 14 to begin.

ROW 1 - 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next 11 chains, ch 1, turn. (12 sc)

ROW 2 - 1 sc in next 12 sc (remember, through the back loops of stitches only), ch 1, turn. (12 sc)

ROWS 3 to 26 - Same as Row 2.

ROW 27 - Joining row, ss to corresponding chs in Row 1, (or you could just sew it together) turn inside out (this is the right side).

CONTINUE AS FOLLOWS FOR THE REST OF THE MITTEN (all sts through both loops) Remember to begin in each row in the 1st stitch, not in the slip stitch where you joined:

ROW 1 - With right side of work towards you, ch 1, 1 sc in the end of each row of ribbing, ss to join, ch 1 loosely, turn. (27 sc)

ROW 2 - Over the next 6 sts, work 1 hdc, 1 ss alternately. In next st increase by making 1 hdc and 1 ss (note: these are made in the same st). Repeat from * to * to the last 6 sts, work 1 hdc, 1 ss alternately over these sts, ss to join, ch 1 loosely, turn. (30 sts)

ROW 3 - 1 hdc in next st, 1 ss in next st, repeat to end of row, ss to join, ch 1 loosely, turn. (30 sts)

ROWS 4 to 12 - Repeat Row 3

ROW 13 - 1 hdc in next st, ch 5, skip next 5 sts (this is for the thumb opening), 1 hdc in next ss, 1 ss in next hdc repeat over the 24 sts, ss to join, ch 1, turn.

ROW 14 - Repeat Row 3 (work the 5 chains for thumb opening as if they were regular sts)

ROWS 15 to 29 - Repeat Row 3

ROW 30 - 1 hdc in first st, decrease over the next 4 sts by crocheting 2 ss tog, 2 hdc tog. In next 11 sts continue in pattern of 1 ss, 1 hdc. Dec over next 4 sts by crocheting 2 hdc tog, 2 ss tog. Continue in pattern over the next 10 sts by making 1 hdc in next st, 1 ss in next st to end of row, ss to join, ch 1, turn. (26 sts)

ROW 31 - 1 hdc in next st, 1 ss in next st, repeat to end of row, ss to join, ch 1 loosely, turn. (26 sts)

ROW 32 - 1 hdc in first st, decrease over the next 4 sts by crocheting 2 ss tog, 2 hdc tog. In next 9 sts continue in pattern of 1 ss, 1 hdc. Dec over next 4 sts by crocheting 2 hdc tog, 2 ss tog. Continue in pattern over the next 8 sts by making 1 hdc in next st, 1 ss in next st to end of row, ss to join, ch 1, turn. (22 sts)

ROW 33 - 1 hdc in next st, 1 ss in next st, repeat to end of row, ss to join, ch 1 loosely, turn. (22 sts)

ROW 34 - 1 hdc in first st, decrease over the next 4 sts by crocheting 2 ss tog, 2 hdc tog. In next 7 sts continue in pattern of 1 ss, 1 hdc. Dec over next 4 sts by crocheting 2 hdc tog, 2 ss tog. Continue in pattern over the next 6 sts by making 1 hdc in next st, 1 ss in next st to end of row, ss to join, ch 1, turn. (18 sts)

ROW 35 - 1 hdc in first st, decrease over the next 4 sts by crocheting 2 ss tog, 2 hdc tog. In next 5 sts continue in pattern of 1 ss, 1 hdc. Dec over next 4 sts by crocheting 2 hdc tog, 2 ss tog. Continue in pattern over the next 4 sts by making 1 hdc in next st, 1 ss in next st to end of row, ss to join, ch 1, turn. (14 sts)

ROW 36 - 2 sc tog 7 times, ss to join.

Cut yarn leaving about an 8 to 10 inch tail. Using a darning needle, weave yarn through the 7 sts of last Row, pull tight to close up the end of the mitten, weave in yarn to secure closing and fasten off.

THUMB

ROW 1 - Join yarn, ch 1 and 1 ss in the first st of thumb opening. Over next 4 sts, do the moss stitch of 1 hdc, 1 ss. Pick up 7 sts around the remaining thumb opening by working moss stitch of 1 hdc, 1 ss. Slip stitch to join, ch 1 loosely, turn. (12 sts)

ROW 2 - Work in pattern (1 ss, 1 hdc) to end of row, ss to join, ch 1 loosely, turn.

ROWS 3 to 10 - Repeat Row 2.

ROW 11 - 1 ss, 1 hdc, in next 2 sts, 2 ss tog, 2 hdc tog, 1 ss, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 2 ss tog, 2 hdc tog, ss to join, ch 1 turn. (8 sts)
