A winter set that turns a baby into a small snowman. It is a cheerful thing to make and it photographs well, which is a large part of why baby sets like this get made at all.
Yarn and hook
Light worsted yarn with a 4.25mm hook. Sized to fit ages 6 to 18 months.
Light worsted is a good weight for baby outerwear – warm enough to be worth wearing in winter, but not so thick that the finished pieces are stiff and awkward on a small body.
Fibre
Soft and machine washable, without exception. This will be worn outdoors, dropped in snow, and washed constantly. A superwash wool or a soft acrylic both work; plain wool will felt and be ruined the first time it goes through a warm cycle.
Safety notes
If the set has a snowman face, embroider the eyes and buttons rather than using safety eyes or sewn-on buttons. Anything attached to babywear should be assumed to end up in a mouth, and embroidered features cannot come loose.
Avoid ties under the chin on a baby hat. A hat that fits snugly enough to stay on does not need one, and a cord around a small neck is not worth the risk. If the pattern includes one, work the hat a little tighter and leave it off.
Sizing
The 6 to 18 month range covers a lot of growing. If you are making this as a gift and do not know the baby’s size, aim for the larger end – a hat that is slightly big can be folded up at the brim, while one that is too small is simply unusable.
