With millions of items for sale and hundreds of thousands of shops selling handmade, vintage and craft supplies, finding out what actually sells can be a challenge.
It is answerable, though, and the method matters more than any list of trending products.
How to find out for yourself
Search for what you intend to make, and look at what comes back.
Sort by relevance and look at the top listings. Those are the ones the platform considers successful.
Check whether shops show evidence of sales. A shop with thousands of sales in one category is telling you that category sells. A shop with beautiful listings and no sales is telling you something too.
Note the price points that appear repeatedly. That is the market rate, whether or not it covers your costs.
Read the reviews. They tell you what buyers actually valued and what disappointed them, which is free product research.
What tends to sell in handmade
Personalised items. Anything with a name, a date or a specific detail. It cannot be bought elsewhere and it justifies a higher price.
Gifts for specific occasions. New baby, wedding, christening, house-warming. People searching for these are ready to buy rather than browsing.
Things that solve a problem rather than decorate. Useful items sell more reliably than ornamental ones.
Supplies and patterns. Frequently better business than finished goods, because they are cheap to fulfil and scale.
Niche interests. Something for a specific hobby, breed, or fandom reaches people who cannot find it anywhere else.
What sells badly
General handmade goods competing on price with mass production. Large time-intensive items, because the price required is more than the market pays. Anything highly seasonal, unless you plan for the season.
The thing that matters more than the product
Specificity.
A general handmade shop competes with everything and is found by nobody. Being the person who makes one particular thing well means you come up in the searches that matter, and you get remembered.
Do the arithmetic before anything
Materials, your time at a rate you would accept, platform fees, payment processing, postage.
If the number that comes out is above what similar items sell for, do not simply match the market – many of those sellers are not counting their time. Make something faster, or something people value more.
