A friendly bit of Halloween decoration that hangs by a door or window and drifts in the wind. The body measures 7 3/4 inches long, not counting the fringe below it or the hanger above, so the finished piece with its streamers is considerably longer than the crocheted section alone.
Yarn and finished size
Worsted weight yarn. White is the obvious choice, and a slightly fuzzy or brushed white yarn gives the ghost a softer outline that suits the subject better than a crisp smooth yarn does.
Making it hang properly
A windsock only works if it holds its shape, and crocheted fabric on its own will collapse into a tube. Thread a ring into the top opening – a plastic craft ring, or a covered curtain ring for something small like this. Crochet a round of stitches over the ring to hide it and anchor it in place. Without that, the piece will hang flat and look like a rag.
The fringe
Cut the fringe strands a good deal longer than you think you need, attach them all round the lower edge, then trim them level once they are hanging. Trimming in place is the only reliable way to get an even hem, because the strands settle at slightly different lengths once they take their own weight.
Outdoors
If it is going outside, use acrylic rather than wool or cotton. Acrylic sheds rain, does not felt, and keeps its colour in sunlight across several seasons. Bring it in over winter and it will last for years.
