Learning to knit is straightforward. By taking yarn and looping it in rows you can make almost anything.

The whole craft rests on remembering the sequence of knit and purl.

The two stitches

Knit. Needle through the front of the stitch, yarn around, draw it back through, slide the old stitch off.

Purl. The same movement mirrored, with the yarn held in front instead of behind. Needle in from the other side, yarn around, draw back through, slide off.

That is genuinely the whole vocabulary. Everything in knitting is those two in different arrangements.

What the arrangements give you

Garter stitch: every row knitted. Lies flat, reversible, squashy.

Stocking stitch: knit one row, purl the next. Smooth on the front, bumpy on the back. Curls at the edges, which is why patterns add borders.

Ribbing: knit and purl alternating within a row. Pulls in and stretches, which is why it appears on cuffs and hat brims.

Seed stitch: knit and purl alternating both across and between rows. Textured, flat, reversible.

Four completely different fabrics from two stitches, decided entirely by the order.

What comes next

Increases and decreases, which give you all shaping – hats, mittens, garments.

Working in the round, for anything tubular.

Cables, which are stitches worked out of order.

Lace, which is deliberate holes paired with decreases.

Colourwork, which is changing yarn.

None of those is a new fundamental. They are all knit and purl, positioned differently.

Mastering it means repetition

Understanding the movement is not the same as being able to do it. Knitting is a physical skill, and the only route is hands that have done it many times.

Expect uneven tension and clumsy hands at first. Everyone has them, and they settle within a couple of projects without effort.

The practical conditions

Smooth, light-coloured yarn in a medium weight, on bamboo needles around 5mm.

Being able to see your stitches matters more than any technique advice. Dark and fuzzy yarns hide the structure, and that is what defeats most beginners rather than the knitting itself.

The first project

Something flat where the fit does not matter, finished within a week. Then start another.

That is the whole method: two stitches, a forgiving project, and enough repetition for the hands to learn.
