The most-made patterns on this site are the mittens, and the convertible ones lead the way: a mitten with a flap that folds back to leave your fingers free, so you can open a door or use your phone without taking it off.
Most of these use worsted weight yarn and a 5 mm (H-8) hook or thereabouts, and each pattern gives its own gauge. Fit matters more on hands than almost anywhere else, so check your gauge on the cuff and try the mitten on as you go – it is easy to add or remove a round before the thumb.
Where to start: if you have never made a mitten, the quick warm mittens and the children’s mittens are short, forgiving projects. Once you are comfortable shaping a thumb, the convertible mittens and fingerless gloves are the natural next step.
